LIVINGSTON, CA – The Carlos Vieira Foundation (CVF) is proud to announce that boxing legend Evander Holyfield will be a special guest speaker for its 4th Annual “Gloves Not Drugs Boxing Show”. Longtime CVF supporter and local company 51FIFTY Energy Drink is sponsoring this event and has made it possible to bring in the four-time heavyweight champion and beloved boxer, Evander Holyfield.
“We are very proud and honored to bring such a legend in the world of boxing to Livingston,” said Bethany Twist of the Carlos Viera Foundation in a phone interview with MCNTV News. “We hear that Evander and the kids are really excited, too!”
The boxing show will take place in Livingston, CA at the Livingston High School Gym on March 12, 2016. Doors open at 1:00 p.m. and the competition starts at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the foundation’s website, www.carlosvieirafoundation.org or you can get them from one of the area’s gym coaches and The Sheriff’s Activities League. At the event, Evander Holyfield will offer an opening announcement, watch the bouts, and then provide fans with a photo meet & greet opportunity.
“There are also ring side VIP tables that can be purchased next to Mr. Holyfield, too” Bethany said and there will be concession stands offering hamburgers and hot dogs for purchase.
Monies from the event go to help fund the four free gyms around Merced County. “We offer free gyms to kids 8 to 18-years-old in Atwater, Livingston, Planada, and Delhi,” Bethany said, “and it helps fund those free gyms throughout the year. The Atwater Gym has been closed for a bit due to a leak in the roof, but we are happy to report that it will be back and reopened with a new coach either this week or next at the latest.”
Bethany also said that there are kids coming from a couple of other states to compete as the event has started to really gain traction since they were able to bring Sugar Ray Leonard last year for the event.
Background on the “Gloves Not Drugs” program and the boxing show: The mission of the Gloves Not Drugs Boxing Program is to provide at-risk kids in Livingston, Atwater, Delhi, and Planada a safe place to go after school and learn the sport of boxing. In partnership with the Merced County Sheriff’s Activities League, the program is designed to keep kids off the streets, out of gangs and away from drugs. Participants also learn about discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, responsibility, good nutrition, and are provided with the opportunity to set their own personal goals and the resources to achieve them.
Every year, the participants get to put their talent on display alongside other kids from boxing clubs from all over the state at the “Gloves Not Drugs” Boxing Show in Livingston. Because it’s a USA Boxing sanctioned event, meaning the results will go on their records, it’s always a day filled with great competition.
With continued support, the Foundation and the Sheriff’s Activities League plan to expand the program opening additional facilities in cities throughout California.
