DUI BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN A FACTOR

MERCED COUNTY, CA – A 7:30 p.m. head-on collision occurred in the area of Highway 140 near Central Ave., just southwest of the city of Atwater.

Officer Onsurez of the Merced area CHP said “We received a call of a Chevy Tahoe driving erratically and the crash occurred at almost the same time that the call came in.”

A witness on-scene told MCNTV News that the driver of the Tahoe was a young male who was swerving in and out of traffic before hitting head-on into the elderly lady’s vehicle. They walked up to her car and they believed that she had already passed. She was still in her vehicle which was described as a Toyota Corolla.

Sheriff Vern Warnke was in the area at the time of the accident and said that the male driver was believed to have been driving 100 mph when the crash occurred.

“His speedometer was pegged at 100 mph when they pulled him out,” the Sheriff said.

The driver of the Tahoe, whose identity has not yet been released has been flown to a hospital. He was found unconscious after his vehicle rolled several times after the collision.
