MERCED COUNTY, CA – Merced Area CHP, Cal Fire and Riggs responded to a head-on collision on state route hwy 59 just outside of Merced at approximately 2:00 p.m. According to Officer Onsurez of the Merced Area CHP, the two vehicle collision occurred when a 35-year-old female driver from Los Banos was traveling south bound on hwy 59 in a silver Nissan Mirano when a 25-year-old female who was driving a red Nissan 200sx traveling north bound on hwy 59 had been passing multiple vehicles on the two lane highway.
When the driver of the 200sx tried to pass a series of slower traveling vehicles again, she was unable to clear the opposite lane and both the Mirano driver and the 200sx driver veered to the south west shoulder where they collided head-on.
The 35-year-old female driver of the Nissan Mirano was flown to Modesto Memorial hospital and a 6 to 9 month old infant that was traveling in the Nissan 200sx was flown to a hospital in Fresno as a precaution.
The 25-year-old woman who was driving the Nissan 200sx as well as a 5 to 6-year-old boy was killed in the accident. Names of the fatalities have not yet been released pending next of kin.
Hwy 59 has since been re-opened in both directions.
