MERCED, CA – At 9:09 p.m. this evening officers with the Merced Police received a call regarding a physical assault that had occurred at the Applebee’s on Olive Ave. The alleged suspect left the scene, but came back to the parking lot of Applebee’s in a black Chrysler 300. Witnesses said that the driver hit another vehicle as he left.
Officers apparently also witnessed the hit and run and pursued the vehicle behind the Big 5 near Devonwood.
Officers then radioed that they had located the vehicle in the 1400 block of Canal and attempted to pull the suspect over, but the driver sped away and at times reached speeds in excess of 85 miles per hour. The fleeing driver ran stop signs and apparently at one point swerved into the oncoming traffic lanes on G Street.
The suspect’s tire suffered a blow out and officers took the man into custody in the area of 26th and G Streets in Merced.
We will have a full report when more information is received from law enforcement.
