MERCED, CA – The Merced PD’s bomb squad responded to a call of a bomb in the area of 23rd and G Streets in Merced after an employee of a local business in the area called about a suspicious package. He stated that he had seen an unknown man get out of a car and leave a package near the train tracks and saw him get back in his vehicle and leave.
The employee check out the item and after noticing what looked like a battery and wires he called law enforcement, which was the right thing to do. Authorities found the device was not an explosive but may have been armed with a locating sensor. It also included a paper that people signed which may indicate it is part of a scavenger hunt.
The area has since been cleared.
