ATWATER, CA – An 11:00 p.m. crash on Brownell Street in Atwater last night could have been much worse as a vehicle traveling at an unknown speed drove onto a yard, missing a tree and hitting a vehicle parked in a driveway. The impact moved the parked vehicle and damaged the wall of the home and it is unknown if the structures integrity was compromised.
The driver was identified as 48-year-old Sergio Ochoa and he was alleged to have been driving under the influence. He did suffer minor injuries and was cited and released once cleared at the hospital.
A press release from the Atwater PD stated – On 04/30/16 at approximatley 11:00 PM, Atwater PD officers were dispatched to a hit and run collision at the Little Caesars Pizza restaurant located at 300 Bellevue Rd. after a report of a vehicle colliding with the building. As patrol officers were responding APD Dispatch advised that the responsible vehicle had now collided with another vehicle and a house on Brownell Street. Officers located the vehicle and driver in the 2400 block of Brownell. The responsible vehicle had struck a parked vehicle in the driveway of the home which then damaged the residence. The driver, Sergio Ochoa, (DOB 10/14/67) suffered unknown injuries from collision and was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Ochoa was transported via ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Merced where he was treated for his injuries. A criminal investigation was conducted and Ochoa was subsequently charged with DUI and Hit and Run. Ochoa was released on a citation to appear as he was still being treated at the hospital upon the conclusion of the investigation.
During the collision investigation at the Little Caesars Pizza restaurant, a citizen backing out of a parking space collided with a parked APD patrol vehicle causing minor damage. The California Highway Patrol responded and handled the collision investigation involving the police patrol unit.
